* * * Old MAYC Logos The Shell

The Shell Image that was used as the MAYC Logo has interesting meaning. David Dalziel tells of the origins below:

The shell represented a long-standing pilgrimage symbol for a pilgrimage to the Spanish coast, Santiago de Compostela.

The shell can be found on the Wesley family crest.

In the 1950’s when Len Barnett was the National Secretary of MAYC the Methodist Youth Department adopted the shell as the emblem of MAYC, which was produced with gold on a green backing thus creating the green and yellow focus.

Other versions of this logo were produced in other colours and where used for ‘shell groups’ and early teens groups across the country.

The Methodist Church went on to use this symbol on the small lapel badge for Methodist Recognition.

In the 1990’s the shell was adapted by MAYC and the flying version of the shell was adopted. This slanted version represented movement in its angle.

During the last 20 years the Methodist Church adopted the Orb, as it’s central logo. MAYC now has linked with this and produced its new logo. Full details of this logo can be found on this website.
