Curriculum is a term that many people associate with formal education, i.e. the range of subjects offered by schools or colleges, enabling individuals to achieve qualifications and gain access into employment or further/ higher education. This is a very structured understanding of curriculum and, for many, one that doesn’t fit easily into their understanding of youth work.

MAYC sees curriculum in terms of a journey, a journey that is influenced by a variety of individuals, groups and other factors, and one that enables young people and youth workers to become more aware of themselves and their
potential. This journey challenges, encourages and enables individuals to explore a wide range of issues, with MAYC focusing, in particular, on aspects of personal, social, political, spiritual and educational development.

A journey can, however, be a complicated activity, including planned and unplanned experiences and influences. Although MAYC may not always
be a significant partner on this journey it does need to be remembered that the experience and influence it offers can, in some cases, be deeply significant and life-changing.
