How can my year out make a difference?

By doing GAP year at Christian Aid. You offer your time and energy - we offer you training, support and resources to inspire young people to change the world. Join one of our area teams in the UK and spend ten months getting young people fired up about poverty and injustice, through events, workshops, worship and campaigns.

To give you a first hand experience of how development works, we take you on a two-week overseas trip to visit organisations we work with. You bring back their stories, their strength and their hope to share with young people here.

The scheme is open to 18-25 year olds in the UK and Ireland.

Suitable applicants will be invited to an info and interview day. If that goes well, we will try to match you with one of the Christian Aid area offices participating in the scheme.

There are a limited number of places left on the scheme this year; interviews for suitable applicants will be on a first-come, first served basis. We therefore recommend you get your application in as soon as possible!

If all places have been filled then subsequent applications may be put on a reserve list. We will contact you to let you know if this is the case.

UK

Outdoor activity Instructors

Gain qualifications while you lead groups in some of the UK’s largest Christian Activity Centres. No previous experience necessary. Activities include: Abseiling/Climbing, Aerial Runway; Environmental Activities; Fencing; Tropical Inc. Rainforest Experience; Heated Swimming Pool; High Ropes Course; Night Walks; Orienteering; Raft Building & much more.

Join a team from all over the world, and make new friends for life!


Homeless shelter / Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Support Workers.

Gain first hand experience in social action work. Assist qualified and experienced staff members in Supporting: Those breaking free from addictions; Refugees; Homeless; Women in crisis.Inner city projects in Edinburgh, London & Reading.

Church youth work / Community ministry.
Gain practical experience in ministry life. Projects include Church based Youthwork, detached youthwork, community ministry. A wide range of denominations available.

What do you get?

Overseas:

Kenya

Based in one of the deprived areas of Nairobi working alongside a local church
minister: Assist local teachers in a variety of subjects in local schools;
Community development work; Assist with building work; Youth camps;
Music projects and more.

What do you get?
Receive a monthly stipend, plus board and lodging. Training & support
throughout your year. Chance to join around 150 people just like you
and make new friends for life!


Russia

Based at an orphanage in a town called Shilovo (pronounced Shilova)
which is in the Ryzan region of Russia about 3 hours East of Moscow.
Live and work with the kids, and also assist in the local schools teaching
English. Get involved in the local area working in other orphanages,
rehabilitation centres for children and young people with special needs,
women’s prison and maybe occasional work with the street kids in Moscow.
Russian language lessons provided (although basic Russian would be a bonus)
