Youth engagement, democratic engagement
There are many names for it and it comes in many guises. Many youth workers already operate top quality projects involving young people in planning and management roles.
Young people are one of our greatest resources in the community and there are several reasons for this:
- They do know things adults do not.
- They have skills that are envied and sort after.
- They have enthusiasm and determination to have their say.
- When young people are involved in their project/group, they take responsibility for it and this leads to peer respect for the project
- An increase in the flow of ideas
- Reduction in the workload for adults
- Increase in the developed relationship between involved adults and young people
Experiences may vary across the spectrum of youth work and sharing these is a good way of getting a wider viewpoint. For further insights you can download comments from a MAYC Youth Participation Weekend - Barriers and Bridges.
