Post-Methodist Conference statement on future workings by
Mike Seaton, National Youth Secretary.
The Methodist Conference was held from 7-12 July 2007 in Blackpool.
Critical decisions were taken in relation to the Methodist Church’s work with children and young people.
In January 2007 the General Secretary for the Methodist Church was quoted in the Methodist Recorder as saying: ‘Initial recommendations suggest that the main areas where permanent staff would most likely be withdrawn or substantially reduced, due to work being approached in a fresh way includes children’s work and MAYC.’
In the months preceding the Conference, numerous circuit memorials were submitted. At the Conference a Notice of Motion was presented, and reference was made to an on-line petition signed by 2,500 people. All requested that staffing and support should be maintained or increased.
The Conference also received a proposal from the Methodist Youth Conference calling for a new youth participation strategy with regional youth participation officers working alongside young people (employed) to enable the Church (at all levels) to involve children and young people in all aspects of its mission and ministry as equals.
