Young people at the heart of the action in the Methodist Church.
Ever wondered how MAYC makes those decisions that directly affect YOU?Confused about how adults know what you think!
Frustrated with what’s going on?
Then we need to hear from you.
Contact the Participation Strategy Group participation@mayc.info . Set up to hear what you have to say and help YOU make a difference. In March 2004 young people from around the UK met to discuss young people’s participation in the Methodist Church. The purpose of gathering young people together is expressed in the “YPinthere Aims” found below as a download.
What is “Participation”?
This is what they said.
“We found that when the word youth participation is used, it amounts to the youth having a seat on committees and able to say stuff. But what is said is not considered as useful and not important, we also found that every one feels the same. What is needed is for the youth on any committee to be able to have some influence in what goes on.”
Take the word apart and rearrange it, and it explains itself. If society, the community, the church give young people the opportunity to be “Part” of the “Action”, they will be “Investing In” young “people”. Before organisations can move forward, they must admit to and identify the barriers to progress. In workshops, along with a group of key adults from the Methodist Church, the young people identified a host of barriers. (Barriers and Bridges can be downloaded here below)
But it is not just about giving young people the opportunity, it must include giving them the support and the means to develop their skills and knowledge to take up the opportunity. Training is available.
